On the Road Again

jimmy

April 3, 2007

Two years ago, Roomie and I had to leave our Los Feliz pad because it got purchased and the new owners wanted to move in. We ended up getting this current place in Echo Park as a result.

Fast forward two years and we’re in the same situation again. Our landlord wants to occupy our unit so off we go to find another place to live. Actually this time I’m going to be finding a place of my own. I’m really annoyed about this, but thankfully I’m better off financially. It really shouldn’t make that huge of an impact.

Now I need to find a place that’s quiet, bright, with no carpets, and accomodating for my Squee-bee. Oh. BTW, Squee celebrated his first birthday on Sunday. My baby’s growing up. *sniff*

The Obligatory Birthday Post

jimmy

March 26, 2007

It’s my 28th birthday on Tuesday, and naturally the thought of where I am in life always arises.

For so long things have gotten out of control in my life. Back in high school I was what most would consider an anorexic. It was not severe – I mean I wasn’t like those girls you see on The Insider who are absolutely skelatal and ripe for exploitation. But my diet back then would comprise of a can of soda during lunch and a small bowl of rice with soy sauce and kimchee for dinner. Whenever I ate anything more, I would starve myself for a day or two hoping to get rid of those extra calories. My mantra was, “Just lose 5 pounds and you’ll be happy.” But that happiness never came.

When I started smoking in junior year of high school, I was delighted that I could feel full with coffee and cigarettes. And you know that coffee is a diuretic so that made it all the better. I was more or less my current height (a little over 6 feet tall) and hovered around 175 pounds which was unnerving. I was too fat and no one would love me. Just lose 5 pounds and you’ll be happy.

Towards the end of senior year I was at my lowest weight: 160 pounds. It still wasn’t enough. I wanted to lose more and more, but at that point my mom intervened and forced me to eat. She would make these greasy kielbasa sandwiches that were sopping with grease and oil that horrified me more than watching a J.Lo movie. We would argue and fight, but I had no other choice. Anyhow she would sit there and make sure I eat every last bit. I guess I didn’t try hard enough, right?

Once I got to college, I just resigned myself to the fact that I’m a manatee. So I went up to 180 pounds. 200. 215. I finally topped at around 255 pounds. I didn’t care really. Since then I lost some weight but depression kicked in soon afterward and I went back up in 2005.

In the last year I decided to take more control. Doing so saw me go to the gym more often and getting a better grip of my finances. I’m still looking at going back to school so I don’t have to do this accounting thing as a job.

But some of the best news came last week: I am the new Dodgers writer for LAist! I just want to forge ahead and fulfill my capabilities. Hopefully then I won’t have this whole self-image problem.

So here’s to being 28 and hopefully being a little smarter and happier.

Changes

jimmy

March 24, 2007

Hey peoples. Things have been really exciting for me this week. The other day, I read that LAist wanted two writers for the Dodgers. I didn’t really think much about it until evildork IMed me and told me to go for it. So I whipped up a little something during my lunch break and submitted it.

So now I’m the new Dodger’s writer for LAist. And I just wrote my first post for them. Actually it was the submission that I sent them, but it still works just the same. Go ME!

Mothers and Fucks

jimmy

February 25, 2007

Relationships with your family are a hard thing. You can’t just sever them without deep repercussions. And as much as you try to run and hide, it will catch up with you in the end.

On Tuesday I got some disturbing news about my mom from my aunt. It’s a tale of deceit and martyrdom that I’ve heard way too often. But this time it’s done in such a grand scale that I can’t help but he very upset with my mom.

If this were any other person, I could directly confront her and just erase her from my life. But this is my mother, and it just doesn’t work as easily. So now I’m put in the role of the parent trying to confront a teenage daughter, and I don’t like this. I guess this is some karmic retribution for my actions in high school. Whatever it is, I don’t like it.

With this brewing all week long1, one of my employees put in her notice. Her last day is this coming Friday. Call it the cherry (dingleberry?) on top of the shit sundae, but now I’m just feeling helpless and not in control. And for an Aries that’s a horrible position to be in.

So here’s to hoping that this coming week will be a better one. And here’s to hoping this fucking guy I’ve been chatting up on Manhunt doesn’t fucking flake. I know I know I know. It’s Manhunt. What do you expect? Yada yada yada. But I really need an outlet right now, and I’m just about ready to burst.

1 I haven’t talked to my family this much in years. Better yet, I haven’t spoken in Korean this often in a long time either. It’s weird cuz I had a dream last night that I was in Seoul with urbanemonkey and her boyfriend showing them around. Huh.
