RIP Unwound

jimmy

April 8, 2002

This only goes to show how slow I am.

Lately, I’ve been listening to Unwound practically nonstop. The noise that they create gives my brain enough energy to keep on going; it’s been the gas to my engine. So here I am at work listening to Unwound during my lunch break, and I decide to check out the Kill Rock Stars site. On the home page, they have a notice saying that Unwound broke up with a bunch of tributes.

What is making me very wary of this is that this is dated 4/1/02. Perhaps it’s just my denial seeping through.

I went shopping this weekend for the first time in months. I bought a couple of shirts from Banana Republic and some eyeshadow from Sephora. I love the glitzy stuff sometimes, so please don’t shoot me. I still want to go to Melrose and get some things that are a bit more funky.

Although Daylight Savings Time has begun, I’m amped up on tons of coffee so I don’t feel it. Perhaps tonight when I collapse I’ll let out a bunch of obsenities.

I love Fridays. It seems, even though I have to work, that all of the stress is taken out of the grind. Perhaps it is psychological, but the feeling is quite liberating.

I still have to do some edits of my zine Art in Deep Koma and will hopefully finish it up by Saturday. I’m at a loss for what I want to do for the second issue. Hopefully doing this zine gets easier as time goes by. Ugh.

Well my mortality flashed before my eyes last week. True I am being a bit melodramatic, but that’s just the nature of my being.

On the exact day of my birthday, I caught the flu that knocked me on my ass for the rest of the week. I was supposed to go to San Francisco, but I was confined to my bed because I had no energy to get up. Such is my life.

Anyhow, now that I actually have some amount of energy, I have been in the final draft of my zine. I will hopefully get that out this weekend for mass consumption. I have also started the second issue which will be more scathing and less “froofy” so to speak.

Being as how I have no life, that’s the only update that needs coercion.

Motivation

jimmy

March 11, 2002

I was supposed to go see Dead Low Tide this past Saturday. No motivation. I’ve been writing my zine. It’s actually getting done. Some motivation.

Now I have a vacation coming up at the end of the month. I’m celebrating my 23rd year alive. It’s making me Discordian thoughts. Is it too late to go back in the womb?

Tomorrow is Milemarker at the Spaceland. I have no idea what to expect, but I’m sure it will be good. Everyone should pick up their latest album, Anaesthetic. It is their most solid album to date. Mmmmmm…..

And it is bloody cold here. There’s a frost advisory, and it’s fucking LA! Makes me wish I didn’t have to go to work.

There is actually a live show coming to town that is exciting me. Yes, Milemarker will be playing before a live audience here on the West Coast. I’m schlepping my ass up to Santa Barbara to see them play on Monday. Then on Thursday, they will be at my favorite venue of all: the Spaceland. So right now, I’m just about as giddy as anyone can be for this. Beware world, I am less discontent than normal.

In other news, I have announced my cabinet to depose the government illegally set up by George W. Bush. I’m sure my Minister of All Things Torture will be quite happy with that. Shit. That means I have to find someone to be my executioner (to kill others oppose me, not to kill me). True, I have much to plan out for my reign, but no one will stop me, the Emperor of America!!!!!

Moments in the Realm of Music

jimmy

December 28, 2001
  • The (International) Noise Conspiracy: They do quite a bit of subversive revolting with their new CD A New Morning, Changing Weather. Not only do they include a manifesto and lyrics, but they also include a reading list that expands the topics of each song. And their music is good!
  • Bjork: With that dress people are still talking about, she set about with her new album Vespertine. The definite highlight for me is “Pagan Poetry”. I still need to get my hands on that video that people are talking about so much.
  • Radiohead: As much as they are tiring me, I still find them fascinating as all hell. Yeah Amnesiac can be construed as Kid A Part II, but who gives a shit? Their music makes me smile. I don’t know if that’s too morbid.
  • X: God bless Rhino Records! They just reissued their Elektra albums and they are great!!!!!! This gets my vote for reissue of the year.
  • Boxed Sets: I just see more and more of them. The difference is now, I’m actually buying them. The Joy Division set heartandsoul is full of hard-to-find BBC recordings.

Here are some albums that I thought were really good this year (in no particular order).

    Bjork — Vespertine
    Depeche Mode — Exciter
    Radiohead — Amnesiac
    Fugazi — The Argument
    Rufus Wainwright — Poses
    Blonde Redhead — Melodie Citronique
    Milemarker — Anaesthetic
Jon Wahl and the Amadans — Sour Suite
The Screws — Shake the Monkey
    Joy Division — heartandsoul
Ex-Girls — On To the Mono Kero
The (International) Noise Conspiracy — A New Morning
    ohGr — Welt
Unwound — Leaves Turn inside You

I think that’s it. I might have forgotten some. Oh well.

Regrettably, there is nothing to look forward to in our culture of hyperconsumption. As the marketing and advertising agencies grab hold on what is the consumer’s primal desire to show off to society, they have created this culture of “more is better”. Consumers are falling for this ploy buying more products that are mostly identical. As the bottom lines of companies grow and grow, the creativity of the consumer diminishes. We are being herded into the field of conformity as each year passes.

The dreary landscape of our consumer culture has led to increasing political apathy. Consumers are becoming more aware (whether consciously or not) that corporations control government. After Reagan’s years of greed, our political landscape has evolved more into a meritocracy (or perhaps an oligarchy). The poor masses don’t control the policies that affect them. Rather, the rich and the privileged get to make these decisions. As each year turns bleaker for the impoverished, voter participation decreases among them (see statistics comparing voter turnout for the richest 1% compared to the poorest 20%).

Something that might be in a zine I’m starting to do. I’m unsure as to the title of it, but I’m starting to do something with my presently useless mind.
