I didn’t fall asleep until 3am, but thankfully I had tons of work to finish since I am taking Friday off. So it was all adrenaline. After work I was about to take a nap until lotusblossom stirred me with the enticement of Souplantation for dinner along with saltyseas. Afterwards it was a party in the Downtown Arts District with Madd for one of her coworkers. The loft was absolutely gorgeous, but there was absolutely no air circulation. I ended up losing 40 pounds being there for an hour. I got home and fell asleep watching The Aristocrats.
This is taken from Nocturne, the live album released in 1984 just before Hyaena came out. It captures the energy and beauty of the music. The album starts with the violent “The Rite of Spring” by Stravinsky and perfectly segues into “Israel”. From then it just steamrolls until it ends with the final encore “Voodoo Dolly”, one the darkest and most evil songs ever written.
As for “Spellbound”, it is my favorite Siouxsie songs of all time. It’s very dancy, very energetic and absolutely sublime. I have listened to this song on repeat for hours once, and I’m still not sick of it.
Although they released Seven Year Itch a couple of years ago, it pales in comparison. Siouxsie just doesn’t have the vocal chops after all those years of boozing and smoking. And let’s face it, you can’t give out the same energy levels when you’re pushing fifty as you can when you’re twenty.
That’s my man there. His arms make me drool. Seriously though.
The Clippers have won their first playoff series since their move to the West Coast. What will really be great is if the Lakers win tonight. Then the second round of the playoffs will pit the two against one another.
If the Clippers get out of the second round of the playoffs, they will win the entire championship. There. I said it.
Edit: This article by Bill Simmons expresses things pretty well. Scroll to the bottom of the article in the section titled “Subplot 9″.
Note 8/29/15: This was not the original image used in this post. Lord knows where it is. But this is the best approximation I could make.
I’m a very excited person right now. I have tickets to see the Clipper’s playoff game against the Denver Nuggets tonight. The Clippers lead the Nuggets 3 games to 1 and could close out the best-of-7 series tonight. This would be the first time they have won a playoff series since 1976 when they were the Buffalo Braves. Also this is the first time they’ve won playoff games since 1993.
Now yesterday, the Lakers stole a game from the Phoenix Suns to go up 3 games to 1 also. If both the Clippers and Lakers win this series, they will meet each other in the next round. There has never been a playoff matchup with teams whose home court is the same let alone in the same city. So it’s just very exciting to be a basketball fan here in LA.
And I will root for the Clippers since I can actually afford to get playoff tickets for them as opposed to the Lakers.
Hooray!!! I got tickets to the Clipper’s playoff game against Denver Monday night. It’ll be my first pro basketball game so I’m uberexcited. And if the Clippers win tomorrow night, then that game will be the clincher. Quelle exciting!
This is taken from Bonzai Superstar, their second LP. It is noisy, dancy and just full of energy. Since it’s the weekend and it’s supposed to get up into the 80s here, I just want to get nekkid and dance.
Since I shared an mp3 yesterday I’ll do the same today.
Just over 4 years ago, I received heartbreaking news: Unwound had broken up for the last time. At first I just thought, “They broke up again?!” They would get back together in a month or two, right?
WRONG!
I admit I was late to the game when it came to Unwound. My friend Fatkid was a huge Unwound fan, and when I was cohosting a radio show with him back in 1999-2000 he had this segment called “Obligatory Unwound” (a complete rip-off of “Mandatory Metallica”). At the beginning of the second hour of the show, he would play an Unwound song. It was then that I came to appreciate Unwound. To this day they are my favorite band of all time.
When they released Leaves Turn Inside You, it marked a departure to their jangly punky grungy sound. You can read some reviews here and here for a good assessment of the album. At the time, one of my closest friends had just passed away. I bought the album that day, and it fit the dark mood I was in.
A couple of years ago, a bunch of us went to San Francisco for 4th of July weekend and did some naughty drugs. Despite not being sober I was constantly freezing. You’ve just got to love SF weather. We met up with a friend from high school, and we talked about how appropriate “Summer Freeze” is for the SF summer.
It’s been a very quiet week at work with a lot of the “higher ups” schmoozing at the National Association of Broadcasters’ conference in Vegas this week. This means doing some cleaning up of stuff around here and lots of web surfing. Unfortunately the interweb is mostly vacuous and boring, so I’m left twiddling my thumbs and doing sudoku puzzles.
So to quell the boredom a little, I will present you guys this:
That’s right. It’s the lovely alt-country band from the mid-90s led by Carla Bozulich and Nels Cline doing a cover of Can. The cover is not very country, and it’s not over 20 minutes long like the original. Carla’s vocals are what make the song. Enjoy!!!!
Edit: Let me add that this song is on their album Butch released in 97 or thereabouts on Virgin Records. Yes. They had a major label deal. Ah. The joys of the 90s.
Eight other people and I had a rawkous time Friday night grooving out to Experimental Dental School. Playing songs from their new album, it was just a fun dancy time. They didn’t play all that well, but the energy was really high that it made up for it (and the fact there were less than ten people there).
Unrelated, since gas prices are through the roof again I have decided to be a public transit whore again. So if you need a blowjob on a bus, hit me up.
Just because of the mood I’ve been in lately, I present you with an almost naked boy again.
I can’t seem to do anything today. Everything I’ve started ended up with me leaving my office after five minutes and just talking to people or losing myself listening to KXLU. I mean they have played “Daydream Nation” and “Hey Joni” by Sonic Youth and “Institutionalized” by Suicidal Tendencies. That latter song sent me through a flashback of junior high. Wow. And all I wanted was a Pepsi.
I’m also trying to get people to go see Experimental Dental School with me @ El Cid tonight. I just found out about the show this morning, and I really want to go. They are part carnival music, part spaghetti western, part punk, part vibrator, and I have a little boy-crush on the singer Jesse.
Ok. I’m being really scatterbrained right now. Enough.
