What I’ve Been Doing This Month

jimmy

December 23, 2007

It’s been a period of readjustment for me in the last month. To tell the truth I’m still trying to readjust to things.

The new job is great. It’s been very hectic and chaotic at work. I realize now that I really must have been restless and bored at my last job since I’ve had absolutely no time to check blogs, emails or what not. So in the blogosphere I am a bit out of touch. I know just enough that LAist has a new editor Zach, but that’s about it.

But the biggest thing I haven’t really adjusted to is the commute. See I used to commute to Burbank which took all of 15-30 minutes. Now I’m going to West LA from Los Feliz which although is only 18 miles takes one hour in the morning and 90 minutes in the evening during normal conditions (ie no accidents).

That means no time for the gym for me yet. Good thing though is my employer is going to partially subsidize the cost of membership at Bodies in Motion which is in the next building over. I think that will work out quite nicely since right now I feel like an ever expanding blob.

Speaking of superficiality, that’s another thing I have to change. Not being superficial. Oh no. That’s like asking me to cut out my frontal lobe. No, everyone at work is so polished. I’ve bitched before in all of the places I’ve worked at that people were just ugly. I went so far as asking the HR director at my last job to fire most of everyone and hire nice looking people.

But at this place, everyone is cute. I’m not saying everyone is rail thin and have great fashion sense or anything, but everyone has that je ne sais quoi if you know what I mean. So I have to get my act together. But isn’t that what life is about?

I’m a Working Girl Again!

jimmy

November 29, 2007

Working Girls

So yesterday was my first day back at work. It was quite strange to be back in the routine that I’ve been in ever since I was 20. That routine being waking up, going to work, come home, crash, repeat. It’s funny how one month of not working could get me so off kilter.

One thing that makes this job different is the fucking commute. Uy my fucking vey! I realize I’ve been spoiled with the 20 minute commutes I’ve had the last 2 1/2 years, but I never knew I had it that great. Now I have to navigate from Los Feliz to West LA. I took the freeways the entire way today, and it took me about an hour this morning and another hour this evening. Yesterday when I took local streets in the evening it took me 1 1/2 hours.

The other thing that’s different is the fact my work computer is a laptop. Yup. I have a lappy now. In fact I’m writing this post while taking a shit. Wait. I need to wipe. Hold on.

Ok. As for the job itself, it’s pretty cool. It’s a much broader job since I’m not focusing on one part of accounting. Parts of it are all new and shiny and exciting, and I can’t wait to delve more and more in it.

But oh my god that commute is absolutely soul sucking. So be prepared to hear a call from me between 5 and 6 in the pm.

Thanksgiving Comedy of Errors

jimmy

November 22, 2007

One more thing before I leave for my family’s. I was watching the Channel 9 news last night after the Laker game and they did a segment where their reporters Leyna Nguyen and Sharon Tay were cooking Thanksgiving dinner. I caught the segment in the 8:00 hour, and it was hilarious.

They had the turkey in the oven baking at 425 degrees for over an hour. They forgot the part of the recipe that says to turn the heat down to 350 after 30 minutes. How can you beat that?

Fortunately the station had a live webcast of the kitchen so I found myself glued to it all night. Plus how can you resist a woman cooking Thanksgiving dinner in a mini skirt and go-go boots with heels?

So here’s the link for all to see.

Also if anyone caught last night’s Project Runway why do this group clap and cry a lot? That’s a little annoying.

Hulu

I already did my little Thanksgiving Day post on LAist, but I am really really thankful that I got a job yesterday. I am now the staff accountant at Hulu.com. Say what you will about the company, but professionally I think it’s a good way for me to work up the ladder. As much as that concept still makes me shudder, that’s life.

I had an initial phone interview two weeks ago, then met with my boss last week. I guess they really liked my enthusiasm, so they brought me in on Tuesday to meet with the CFO. I was with him for two hours where we got into the details of my experience. They really wanted someone with experience in Oracle Financials, so he had me actually use it to enter an invoice. I impressed him by telling him how to change things around to be more efficient and all. So yesterday my recruiter called me to tell me the good news.

As for pay, they’re giving me the max they could offer which is good. It’s a good pay raise for me, but I still know I’m being underpaid with respect to what I’m doing. But like I said, it’s a way for me to get more experience so I’m willing to sacrifice a little.

So I’m excited to get back to work. I start on Wednesday. After having almost a month off, I was starting to get really stir crazy. There’s only so much time I could take off.

I can’t wait!!!!

Barebacking vs. the World

jimmy

November 16, 2007

Barebacking

As a part of the male breed of humanity, I loves me my porn. I’m not going to intellectualize porn or anything. It’s just fun to watch, right?

Being a person that partakes in the art of faggotry, I go to Naked Sword to view movies. They have all the releases from the major gay porn houses like Titan Media, Raging Stallion, COLT and Falcon (unfortunately they don’t have an agreement with Lucas Entertainment.)

When I logged in this past weekend, much to my surprise I saw a lot of titles that featured barebacking. This was in direct contrast to what founder Tim Valenti said in August’s Out feature entitled
“Baring the Truth” by James Gavin:

As cofounder of NakedSword.com, a Shangri-la of gay video on demand—none of it bareback—Valenti has met lots of the subgenre’s young models. “I found them to be extremely naive about what they were doing. Young people were being pushed into participating in something without having a clear understanding of the ramifications. I didn’t want to be part of it.”

I’ve sent out some emails trying to get to the bottom of this. I’m waiting for their responses.
Matthew at Boy Culture says:

Whether or not I agree with outlawing prostitution between consenting adults (I don’t), if the government can outlaw prostitution allegedly for our health, why not outlaw bareback porn? I think I’d prefer an intrusive, restrictive approach to a non-approach, and to silence.

I don’t see the connect between porn and reality. Just because I get off on fisting movies doesn’t mean I like getting fisted or fisting someone. Porn is merely the product of our fantasies. That’s it.

It is alarming that HIV rates among gay men are on the rise again, but to put the blame on barebacking movies is a stretch at best. The fact more gay men aren’t using protection can be attributed to the lax attitudes about HIV due to more sophisticated treatment. There’s always the meth problem also.

In the end the onus is on the individual with regards to protection. If you get HIV you can’t blame meth, porn, the Bush administration or anything else. We have all been made aware in our culture what steps are needed to keep ourselves safe. And if you still manage to catch HIV, well then you have no one to blame but yourself.

The only thing that really bugs me about these bareback flicks is the health of the actors. John Carr from the Bay Area Reporter posted “Sister Zsa Zsa’s Epistle to the Gay Porn Industry”. While it has some great tips to the industry, it still makes me a bit uneasy.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls

I hate all of you assholes. Why has no one ever told me how absolutely wonderful this movie is? Huge tits, awful dialogue, gruesome murders and a groovy soundtrack. How can you go wrong?

I just finished watching this masterpiece directed by Russ Meyer and written by Roger Ebert, and I really want to watch it again. Too bad I have to return it to the video rental place right now. It straddles the line of being an awful movie that it’s just genius.

Stuffy Head

I have a second interview with a company tomorrow and my faggot ass went and got a cold. It started Monday night, and I’ve been on the attack ever since. It’s not a bad cold. I just have mild stuffiness, a low fever and general fatigue. That’s why god invented Advil Cold and Sinus Geltabs.

But right now I’m awaiting the premiere of season 4 of Project Runway. I can’t wait for it to start!!!!!!!! I already know who one of the finalists is (and I’m not telling). Well maybe if I get a nice bribe out of you. 🙂

The Egg Lady!

jimmy

November 9, 2007

“No I don’t want no goddamn eggs! I want meat and potatoes!”

I watched John Waters: This Filthy World last night, and in it he talks delightfully about one Edith Massey.

She led a tough life, but as John Waters said she was the nicest person you could ever meet. I loved her in Female Trouble where she plays Ida Nelson. “You made Gator leave! I got something for your face motherfucker!” And there she splashes acid on Divine’s face. Simply exquisite!

In the 80s she recorded two songs with her punk band Edie and the Eggs. I’ll be playing them in my podcast tomorrow.

One of the best things though is the music video she was in with John Cougar Mellencamp. Yes in 1981 she won over the heart of Johnny Cougar over a party full of floozies.

She died in 1984 and is interred at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetary, the same place Marilyn Monroe, Jim Backus (Mr. Howell), John Cassavetes, Rodney Dangerfield, Merv Griffin and many others are buried.

Anyone feel like a field trip sometime soon?
