I was listening to Morning Edition on KCRW on my way to work. They had a story on the rise in volunteers in Hong Kong due to SARS. It was mostly a feel-good piece, but you know me: I have to be cynical about everything. Does it really take a deadly epidemic for businesspeople and other megakapitalists to get their heads out of their asses and start caring for the world in general? Being ever more cynical, once SARS becomes another faded memory to laugh at during dinner parties next summer, will the volunteers still be there or will it be business-as-usual? I really do need to take a vacation.
